My Appreciation for the Funeral Guild and Reception Committee

Greetings, Good People of Glenn,

I attended Gatra Mallard’s memorial service a few weeks ago. I had the privilege of getting to know Gatra and Bill Mallard for a short time, 25 years ago, when I was an active member of Druid Hills UMC. They led many workshops at my church, which I attended. As the Church Business Administrator here, I make rounds through Glenn's buildings several times a day, so I see the daily activity of the many churchy folk who answer God’s call in this place. Two of Glenn's many behind-the-scenes ministries are the Funeral Guild and Reception Committees. I am grateful for the dedicated volunteers whose quiet, behind-the-scenes work makes meaningful moments possible, often without recognition but with great love and care.

Several days before a special service, Reception Committee volunteers shop and deliver supplies, cut up and prep food, check punch bowls and trays, and count napkins, plates, and cups. On the day of the service, it is all hands on deck as tables, linens, silver trays, and silver candlesticks are set out. Other volunteers arrive with homemade cookies and the ever-present pimento cheese sandwiches as a fabulous reception buffet comes to life.

Also, on the day of the service, ushers and Funeral Guild members arrive at the Sanctuary a few hours in advance. They receive numerous floral deliveries, assist the funeral home as needed, help the family place mementos in prominent locations, put out the bulletins, ensure tissues are available, set out the guest book, and assist where needed.

In a recent staff meeting, Pastor Jimmy read from Richard Rohr’s Daily Meditation: Re-Enlivening Ministries: “Healing was most of the work Jesus appeared to do. It is almost too obvious. Either we see Christ in everyone, or we hardly see Christ in anyone. Either we are Christ to everyone, or we cannot be Christ to anyone.” I see the work of these committees as a true calling to build and nurture our church family, supporting one another through love and shared purpose, and “…striving toward supporting the supreme work of love flowing into the world.” I am so grateful to be surrounded by the Funeral Guild and Reception Committee volunteers, and by the loving ministry they provide through hospitality, comfort, and compassion.

Peace and Grace,

Cliff Richards, Church Business Administrator
