Loving God, Loving Neighbor

Ministry Through Music

Striving to discern and proclaim the will of God and to relate people and God in worship, the music program hopes to bring all ages closer to the Gospel of Christ through music. We address these goals through vocal choirs for all ages and through our organ, piano and other instruments in worship.  Our choirs sing of and to God in worship and also teach our children and youth of our Christian tradition through music.

The Music Fund is one of eight categories of endowment funds managed by the Board of Trustees. This fund supports special projects in Glenn’s music program, including the participation of guest musicians in worship and concert.  Among these is our Choral Scholar program, which provides stipends for eight area college students to sing with the Chancel Choir. Tax deductible contributions may be made via check, payable to Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, designated for The Music Fund.  We are grateful to donors to the Music Fund for so generously supporting music in our congregational life.

In 1997, they gave the American premiere of four contemporary Irish sacred works.  In the fall of 2005, they sang in a nationally promoted and recorded concert at Emory celebrating the music of William L. Dawson.  The Chancel Choir also participated in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Atlanta Race Riots, the 2008 Eucharistic Congress of the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Georgia Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association's 2008 conference at Spivey Hall.  On recent tours, they have sung in worship at the University of Chicago’s Rockefeller Chapel and Riverside Church in New York. On March 2, 2008, the Chancel Choir presented a performance reading of Steven Darsey’s new setting of Sidney Lanier’s “The Marshes of Glynn.” Click here for more information about this performance.  In 2010, the Spring Concert featured early Passion meditations by Heinrich Schütz and the cantata, Pilgrim's Journey, by Ralph Vaughan Williams.  The Spring Concert in 2011 included the music of Henry Purcell and Benjamin Britten.  The featured work was the Georgia premiere of Triptych, a cantata for chorus and string orchestra by British composer Tarik O'Regan.  Titled "Of Thy Love, O Lord, I Will Sing," the 2012 Lenten Concert included works for chorus, soloists, strings, harp and organ.
