The Christian church was just a few days old when its members found themselves in the realm of economics. Jesus’ disciples had drawn up a rough organizational plan for the community: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
Near the beginning, the members of First Church Ever had to confront the idea of property and possessions. “What belongs to my family and me, and what should I share with others?” We know from Luke’s record that the earliest Christians decided to have “all things in common.” That’s been a fundamental principle of the Christian life from the outset: we share with each other, and we help those in need.
 
The church is like a large family that we all volunteered to be a part of. Whether or not we agree with every specific detail of our personal family life, we share and care for one another because our family defines and completes us. The church is no different. It’s a community of people “with glad and generous hearts” about which Luke says, “Day by day the Lord added to their number.”
 
Our campaign isn’t about pressure, it’s about eagerness and joy. It’s not about guilt, it’s about grace. It’s not about a compulsion to give, it’s about the compassion to help. It’s not about obligation, it’s about the love we have for God and the gratitude we feel for what God has done in our lives.
