Summer Supper Groups

Get to know Glenn friends –new & old- this summer! Summer Supper Groups will be arranged by each group to meet several times June through August for food and fellowship. Whether you prefer dining with adults only at a local restaurant mid-week, or a 'kids-everywhere' weekend picnic, or meeting people in a different age/stage, there's a group for you!   (And groups will be forming throughout the summer.)   No strings attached --just fun, fellowship, and food as we renew and reconnect with God and one another!

Glenn UMC Local Mission Trip North Alabama

Thursday, July 12 - Sunday, July 15'

Have you been waiting for a local mission trip that fits easily into your schedule? Are you anxious to get to know new people at Glenn UMC? The missions committee has made it happen!

WHERE?  We will be going to the Mountain Lakes District of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. Once we officially register our group we will be assigned a specific site. WHAT? The goal is to help rebuild areas (churches and houses) within the North Alabama district struck by tornados in 2011 and 2012. WHEN? Departure from Atlanta will be late afternoon Thursday July 12, work all day Friday and Saturday with return to Atlanta Sunday July 15th. HOW?  There is a job for everybody from painting to cooking to sheet rocking.  We will have experienced workers leading and teaching us the skills needed.  No previous experience is needed. WHO? Anybody 14 years old and up are invited to participate. HOW MUCH?  Cost will be less than $70 per person to help offset cost of supplies.   We will be staying in a local church, preparing our own meals and traveling in personal vehicles.  If you can’t go but would like to support the trip, we would appreciate any contributions for gas money, food and supplies. COMMITMENT:  The goal is to take a team of at least 15.  We would like to know by May 20th if you are interested so we can register our team.
QUESTIONS:  contact Clayton Vertrees at james.vertrees@gmail.com (270)314-2890 or Cheryl Griffin at cherylgriff81@gmail.com 404 428-9636.

Youth Choir Mission Trip to the Bahamas

An exciting Youth Choir tour is planned for June 15-21, 2012.  Thirty-two youth and adult chaperones will travel to the Bahamas to meet The Methodist Church of the Bahamas through song, service, and surf!  The choir will offer concerts, participate in worship services, sing in schools, and help renovate a house for use as a Youth Center on Harbour Island.  The week promises to be an exciting, adventure-filled time of growth, musically, spiritually, and culturally.

Each youth will pay $700 to participate; an additional $14,000 is being raised by the group to cover the cost of the trip, including the building supplies needed for the renovation project.  To support the Glenn Youth Trip to the Bahamas, click here.

New Ministry Opportunity at Montclair Retirement Home

For those who have not heard of our new ministry opportunity at Montclair Retirement Home (part of Clairmont Place – across the street from the VA on Clairmont Rd), each 1st & 3rd Sunday at 4pm, we have been asked to lead a short devotional/sing-a-long/worship/Scripture reading/Prayers etc. ( or any combination!).  Music is optional, but preferred!  This can be adult or children led – as simple as singing a few songs and reading a prayer or as “formal” as planning a service with a homily and serving Communion (available through our Homebound Communion ministry).

The residents (approximately 5-25 in the dayroom) range in age from 75-100+ with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments.  Glenn’s own Alene Strickland and Jo DeSana will be among those delighted to have us. The “service” can be as casual or as formal as you’d like – ranging from 20 minutes to a full hour.  The ministry of presence is what makes this a beautiful addition to our monthly outreach ministries at Glenn. Click here to sign up to help on a Sunday – feel free to sign up as individuals or a group.  The sign up link goes through the entire year!  Please look at your calendars for choirs, etc. and sign up where you can. If you have anxiety about what to do, please let me or Kathy know – we’re happy to talk with you and/or come with you to Montclair. Please forward to any/all who may be interested in being a part of this special outreach.

New Security System for the Church School Building

As you may or may not have noticed, a new security system has been installed in the Church School Building. We will be waiting until summer to activate it, so that we have to introduce everyone to it, and explain how it will work. If you have any questions, please contact BJ Copelan at bettyj@glennumc.org.
